World Languages Mission

Cross Campus:

Our mission is to ensure that students will

  • understand and respect the culture of the country whose language they are studying and thus gain a more international perspective of life;
  • be given the opportunity to learn a foreign language to the best of their ability;
  • develop an enthusiasm for language learning that will remain with them throughout life.

Primary World Languages:

Through an interactive approach, we aim to develop

  • children's awareness of cultural differences;
  • basic communicative skills.

Secondary World Languages:

Our mission is to ensure that students will develop an understanding of and an ability to communicate in a foreign language in line with ability and experience.

The World Languages Faculty comprises of thirteen members of staff. The Head of Faculty's responsibilities are clearly defined as being in overall charge of the Faculty and is supported in the leadership by two coordinators.

Patana begins the teaching of World Languages in the Primary School with a specially designed carousel programme in Year 3 from which the students go on to choose a World Language to study form Year 4 - Year 6. Students continue the same language into the Secondary School where they take up an additional language in Year 7. French, German, Mandarin, Japanese, Spanish, and Thai are taught. All Secondary School World Languages teachers teach from Key Stage 3 to IB.

The Faculty, in line with the rest of the School, uses the English National Curriculum at Key Stage 3. In Key Stage 4, students study for the (I)GCSE examination. At Senior Studies level, students take the International Baccalaureate courses where they can continue with the language studied at (I)GCSE, or may start a new language at Ab Initio level, or may study a home language Language A, leading to the bi-lingual diploma, either as a taught course or school supported self-taught course. The school responds to the demands of the students, wherever possible, and these courses can be offered in all languages.

The Faculty is housed in a new, purpose designed area, with a well-used breakout area, library, and small meeting room, and each language classroom is fully equipped with an interactive whiteboard and audio equipment.

Language students are grouped in mixed ability classes.

The World Languages Faculty is led by a Head of Faculty and three curriculum co-ordinators, Spanish, French/ German and Asian Languages.
